Just enjoy it. The purist may pout but the reality is ain't nobody can tell the difference between the two once it's on the wood.

I would have thought that it would be ok to apply raw linseed oil onto wood that has previously had boiled linseed oil on without removing it first, unless anyone knows differently? If I'm unsure of what has been on the wood before I'll normally wipe down well with mentholated spirits and leave the wood 24hrs to dry before applying the linseed oil.
New to the M1 Carbine world, and a bit naive as to the passions that run deep in this prestigious group of collectors. I bought the rifle to shoot and teach my Grandson about shooting and our history. When I cleaned up the stock on my NPM what was on the rifle originally remained I only removed the dirt and grunge. Then applied the finish in light coats. And yes, it does look good and it is not glossy in any way. Still looks as original as any of the images posted on this and other forums. It is a great little piece and I intend to treat it with the care and respect I do with all of my firearms.
I had to strip this stock & HG with Formby's furniture stripper because the previous owner covered them with shellac. I applied 3 coats of Formby's tung oil, wiping with 0000 steel wool between coats, a & after the last coat. This is the finish I was looking for.
