1933 No.4 Mk1(T) Sniper "Trials Rifle"
c/w with matched No.32 Mk1 scope by William Watson & Sons

This is one of original trials rifles upgraded and converted to sniper configuration by RSAF Enfield. They only did 1,403 of these before Holland and Holland (S51) began producing the standard No.4(T)'s, based upon regular No.4 Mk1 production standards.

This rifle is "all correct" and features the original round cocking piece, "waisted" front sight protector, hinged front barrel band, butt marking disc. folding aperture sight with battle sight removed and magazine cut-off. According to Skennerton's book "The British Sniper", the latter was removed during the conversion, however, this rifle has a correct style original one added back to reflect it's 1933 No.4 Mk1 "Trials Rifle" heritage. All of these "Trials" sniper rifles were original fitted with the No.32 Mk1 scope.

On the one lowly trials T that I had, the mag cut-off was still present. The condition I bought the rifle in would hardly suggest anybody would have tried to restore it, so I have to ask: Is there anything to suggest that the cut-offs were removed during conversion?

I thought the same about the cut-offs, then during the research on this rifle I came across a reference in the book, The British Sniper by Ian Skennerton (1983) - ISBN: 0949749036 which said on page 242 that There was a provision for a magazine cut-off, which was removed. This remark appears in a section discussing what was done do the original No4. Mk1 "Trials Rifles" during the conversion process at RSAF Enfield.

I suspect that they indeed may have done this, simply because the use of this kind of feed limiting cut-off technology had become obsolete by then, similar to the removal of the long range dial sights that was performed on the P14 snipers set-up early in WWII.

I remember this one from the CGN discussion about it ... :)

The SMLE No 1 Mk V & Mk V1 along with the No.4 Mk1 "Trials Rifle" all used a stamped sheet metal cut-off, as opposed to the forged ones on the earlier rifles. You can tell the difference by looking at the round part that forms the grip. The early style is solid with a hole drilled in it, while the sheet metal unit has a gap where it was rolled over to form the round part.

I was just working on the photo montage (over 270 pics so far ... :move eek: ) . As a result, here's some close up pics of the "Trials Rifle" cut-off, which is the correct stamped sheet metal cut-off and marked with Enfield inspector markings on the underside.

I finally got my ultimate rifle, a Long Branch No 4 Mk I T rifle, from member Stencollector. All matching and in very nice condition. Not something you find for sale just any day and when you get the chance...best jump on it.
This rifle is complete with an REL No 32 Mk 3 scope,(scope number matches buttstock, bracket number matches rifle serial number) leather lens covers, leather sling, No 15 chest and scope tin with strap(which is Brit)

Great find, as you don't see these kind of rare collectibles available much anymore, so take good care of her....

It's just my opinion, but if anyone is looking for this kind of quality and rarity, you don't find them in forum "for sale" environments. The Quartermaster Stores here might be a bit of an exception, as I know ~Angel~ and I are planning to use it as the exclusive venue, when we start moving some of our higher quality pieces starting next spring. We're building a new house and I need to cull the herd for space. :D

Just some advice for anyone searching for high quality and rare collectibles. If you know you want something like this, get out and market yourself by sending emails to folks who are in the know, or have these kinds pieces. Ask for "first right of refusal", should they ever decide to sell. That's how ~Angel~ has found most of her premium collectibles, not by reading ads, plus she rarely dickers with asking price. You either want it, or you don't.... ;)

In reference to pics, I find that a simple backdrop sheet of a uniform color makes the most difference. That, plus any kind of a camera that has a built-in "macro" or "close-up" option capability.

I decided to buy myself a christmas present this year. Well, I do that every year, and its always a rifle. Pistols is a birthday thing.

As some of you know I have a crush on G3's. I have also been looking for a good non-restricted .223 that I can use for service rifle competitions at my range (homestead).

So I bought my first non-milsurp rifle, ever. Looks rather strange next to the g43's and k98k;s and svt40 etc etc. But it will prove a good range gun.

I haven't got it home yet, but here is a little milsurp I purchased this month.

It's WW2 vintage, and made in Canada by Otis Elevator. Weighs in at around 5500 lbs, so it will likely get stored in the quonset hut vice the gunroom.

This was the reason I chose to part with my LB no4T, which Cantom can now covet. Sure, they made 3 times as many of these as they did LB snipers, but I still consider this a hard to come by piece.

Very very cool. I hope you have enough garage space to store it. If you were to tow it to the range, would you have to cover it up somehow, use a trailer etc. to take to range for some "skeet" shooting?

I assume its live, but even if it isnt, its still quite the collector piece.

Garage space won't be too much of a problem. I dragged home a surplus Quonset building from the base here a couple years ago. 3500 square feet to fill, although quite frankly it's starting to get pretty full now.
That was actually one of the reasons why the previous owner sold it to me. After all his hard work restoring it, he couldn't stand to think of it rusting in outdoor storage out east.
I'm not sure what the trailer regulations are here. Towed equipment is not necessarily a trailer, so I might get away with just a single red light on the back. Otherwise, I have seen the howitzer type clamp on light assemblies at the local mil scrapyard....I can adapt those to fit the barrel.
