Mossberg barrel device of some sort

I recently won a Mossberg 144LSB at an on-line auction. The auction pics weren't the greatest, but I could tell there was something on the end of the barrel that I've never seen.

It arrived at my FFL dealer and I got a few pics before it went inot his safe for the "10 day cooling off period".

It is in pretty decent shape, with a sling, sights and a magazine

The knurled knob appears to be a thread protector for some fairly course threads. Does anyone have any ideas about the thing on the muzzle?

Is that not for joining up a supressor?

Tune-able vibration damper?

I would guess a thread protector for suppressor threads. I you loosen up the rear lock nut and tightening nut , aligning the cut-outs with the front sight , the assembly will slide off. I'll bet you'll find threads on the barrel underneath.

I might know what that is, Back in the late 1970's and early 80's there was a company that sold a item much like that, it was for putting a 2 leter bottle on the end of a gun, making a ONE SHOT supressor. you wold have to replace the bottel after each shot as the bottom blew out. I actually heard that they worked. check it by trying to thread a plastic bottle on the end with the mouth fitting inside of the recess. it should screw in, if it does, then you know what you have .

Ah yes , the ol' two liter bottle slipped onto the flash hider of an AR-15 and hosed clamped in place trick. Didn't seem to muffle much , but the muzzel flash sure did melt the plastic which ran down inside the birdcage welding the bottle top to the rifle in one shot............or so I've been told ;>O .

Yes, that is what it looks like to me. A guy near here makes them for his and his buddy's .22 rifles used in competition.

Definitely not for a 2 litre bottle. There is a threaded nipple that sticks our of the front of the device. The knurled knob protects the threads.

Could it be a cleaning rod guide, Swedish Mausers have something that slips on around the foresight...

The "thingy" looks like it has been on there for a while, but I do not know for sure that it has ever been shot with it in place. I just do not want to risk bulging the barrel or damaging the rifle if it doesn't quite line up with the bore center.

I finally just went ahead and removed the thing. If it is a tuner of some sort, I guess the rifle is now out of tune. If it is a moderator adapter, I can't used it anyway...I live in a silencer unfriendly state .

Possible, but the lock rings that hold it in place are such that the front sight has to come off for them to be removed...so it was made to be permanently attached, or at least semi-permanently.

Now that I see the threaded portion on the front end I will guess it is for a "moderator". Yeah, just leave it off.

It's stamped "144" on top of it. Hmmmmm. Too corse a thread for a silencer.

I'll buy it off ya' for 5 bucks just to add to my collection of weird useless things added to a rifle! Seriously!

Well , they used what they had. USS course was supplimented with SAE fine threads in the '30s. My USMC .22 Reising was threaded for a suppressor in WW2 and they used the new 9/16 SAE threads on it. It's worked fine so far with a modern suppressor made up to look kinda like a Maxim.
