how does your bayonet adapter fit after cutting back the barrel? I'd imagine if the heat shield didn't rest perfectly against the barrel on its dimples, it could be massaged into perfection.
That is why I suggested taping up your barrel, and use it as a form. Grind, sand, then polish the surface of your hammer to a mirror finish and you won't leave any marks. You'll get the main curve...
