I remember shooting one with surplus N-D-N ammunition and getting a 8-10" group. Then I shot some commerical .303 and that group shrunk down to around 2". Good rifles.
The only thing you do to a case hardened surface is to lightly clean & oil.
If you want a shooter, lop off part of that barrel and have it recrowned. If it's not a shooter, leave it alone.
