I would think a fat hardwood dowel with a piece of sheet steel as a shim would do the trick. Could use one of the tabs from an electrical box as the shim if you need something harder.
While you are...
those look to have a chamfer for part of the head to reside. When bucking a rivet, the shank will expand and "flow" to fill the space and tighten the joint provided it was clamped together tight....
That photo above the left rivet looks peened, and not ground flush. After peening, it would be fairly easy to make them look perfect..chamfer the hole in the heat shield to leave enough meat on the...
Look on Ebay. There is a guy who makes/sells steel rivets of all sizes for making medieval armor. I ordered from him to fabricate my Krag hand guard clips...lemme find the seller...here you go....
Fascinating. Thanks Tom! (and Jim!).
Curiously, the first 1897 has muzzle roughly flush with the bayonet guide. The second 1897 it's proud, and the model 12 it's recessed. This means many of the...

Some good pictures of what is hopefully an original here...

I bought these when making and attaching clips+rivets to new krag...

well done. I knew you would do it fine...now if I could get a bayonet adapter(s), I'd ask Ryan make me some too.
LOL...you sound like you've already predicted my future.
hopefully if I call on the phone and convince him of what a nice guy I am...he'll put me in the queue :).

Did you say you also placed an order with https://partsforantiqueguns.com for a kit?
I corresponded early last week with Jack Schwartz there asking some questions about fit, to which he promptly...
how does your bayonet adapter fit after cutting back the barrel? I'd imagine if the heat shield didn't rest perfectly against the barrel on its dimples, it could be massaged into perfection.
That is why I suggested taping up your barrel, and use it as a form. Grind, sand, then polish the surface of your hammer to a mirror finish and you won't leave any marks. You'll get the main curve...
Why not form it yourself? Unless I misread above, you have 22 or 24 gauge soft steel (.03?). Tape up your barrel, and use it as a form to press it around, light taps with smooth flat hammer on the...
