Question - M1938 M1 Garand Scabbard for Jeep.
Not sure this is the proper place to ask a question that is related to the M1 Garand. A friend recently gave me the M1938 Scabbard as a gift. He said he had seen it advertised and thought it would be a good gift for me as he knew I collect M1 Rifles. As I know there are many repros available and not knowing anything about this scabbard I was concerned. The scabbard itself appears to be original. It has the US stamping and manufacturers name (HOTZE) and 1942. I am concerned about the straps. The first thing that bothered me was that the keepers are not stitched but are stapled. The clips on the end of the straps seem to be finished in a dark black enamel paint. My thought is that the straps are either later replacements or reproduction. I don't know if staples were used in 1942. If they are reproductions they are of very good quality. I know pictures would be a big help but I am not sure how to post pictures. That will take me quite a while to figure out. Any information or a place I might better research this scabbard would be appreciated. Thanks

Joe, Also was given a 1943 carbine scabbard years ago, but the straps did not match the scabbard color and had black enamel gloss paint on the metal. Later
found out the straps were reproduction. It is very difficult to locate any WW2 scabbards with original straps.
I don.t think your straps are original - my opinion
Charlie Painter would know !

Thanks Robert, that was my thought also. The straps just looked to good to be over 75 years old but were a good quality reproduction. The scabbard itself looks good. Hope your doing well. I am doing ok for an old man.

Sept 1940 rifle
Joe, thanks again for locating that original keystone spring and round body spring guide for me a few years ago. I had a Sept 1940 rifle for quite a long time but was missing the original keystone spring, which can take years to find. Joe had a friend that was selling an original keystone spring with round body guide and I was able to buy it through Joe. Photos of the rifle, bore is quite nice too.
