The USS Liberty was attacked by air and naval forces of Israel. When the attack was finally over nearly 2/3rd's of the crew was either dead or wounded.

Please pause a moment and remember the crew of the USS Liberty - the sailors, marines and civilians who were killed and wounded that day and the survivors who have fought to have the story told.

PS a new book has just been written about the attack by Author James Scott. I have not read it but early reviews seem favorable.

A few months later the Koreans took the USS Pueblo. We (Gov.&media)made a bigger international stink over that than they did the Liberty.

I had friends aboard the Pueblo - I was stationed just north of Bellingham, WA when they were captured. I was on duty that a'noon and night and I can positively assure you that the Pueblo never entered North Korean waters until after their capture. They went through hell while imprisoned and said that every time they heard a big jet flying high overhead, they prayed for a blinding flash of light that never came. Hank was right, it all falls on the head of LBJ - so many errors!! But they did show their spunk with the "Hawaiian Good Luck charm" gesture - and, of course, they paid dearly for it! Lloyd Bucher was a good man and was scapegoated for the incompetence above him. He deserved better - although he was not court-martialed, his career was over and he never received a further promotion.

And, yes, I had friends on the Liberty, as well. Many more died, but it didn't take 11 months to end. Mostly, I more closely identify with the Pueblo because "I was there", so to speak.

And neither incident has ever been satisfactorily resolved, IMHO.

Chief, did you folks have a ship cruising to and fro in the Gulf of Siam? While I was stationed in Bangkok, 1961 - 1963, to "study wave propagation in the upper atmosphere", that ship would hit port periodically and the town would tremble a bit. I never met any of the crew but always suspected they were NSG. I don't know what it might be designated today; ASA itself has been folded into something else.
