In 1959 I went deer hunting and I had a Model 38 with a cut down barrel. My grandfather loaded the rounds and Jap 6.5 ammo was extremly cheap. Lot's of youngsters used them as their first hunting rifle.

When I went to VN my brother sold mine for some dope.

I finally replaced it and WHAT, ammo for this is equal to a handful of GOLD.

Try Graf and Sons (Grafs.com, I think). Hornady makes a very reasonably priced ammo that's better generally than the Norma stuff. All the reloading stuff too!

You were lucky to find ammo even at that time. In my recollection, 6.5 and 7.7 Japanese ammo were never very cheap. Neither was factory loaded in the U.S.; the main supplier was Norma and that ammo was (and is) expensive. Unlike 8mm Mauser and other European ammo, there were no huge quantities of surplus Japanese ammo imported after the war. I don't know why, but assume it was destroyed long before Sam Cummings or other importers could get to it. And of course, much of the supply was scattered over a thousand tropical islands where it quickly became unusable.

I bought a type 38 at our gunshow in feb. of this year.I got new manufacture ammo made by Precision Cartridge Inc. from Grad and sons. Total for 5 boxes(100 rds) was $98.00 including the freight.It shoots 2 inch groups at 100 yds through my rifle.The brass is good quality and the cartridge is loaded with 144 gr fmj bullets.HTH pdh

I'm wondering if one of my uncles had a couple of boxes of issued ammo in one of his duffle bags that he brought home. He was a Marine Captain and was one of the officers in on the clean up of remaining Japanese soldiers on some island. I don't have a clue which one. He brought at least 3 swords and several Arisaka's. This was in S Dakota. My Dad was in the VA hosp at Battle Mountain and having relatives in the same area was pretty good for me growing up.
