I knew this stuff was good already, But I was still surprised at the performance of the Hornady 168 gr Amax Garand match ammo.
I had 13 rds of it left over from the Eastern Games and decided to put them through my Clint Folwler 3 lug Garand today. Now this is a humdinger of an M1, with every trick in the book. It is supposed to shoot, but it can't do it without good ammo. No matter how many times I learn that little bit of wisdom, I still get surprised at how much better some ammo is than others.
I shot all of those bullets into a nice round 4" group at 300 yrds today from position with my new Les Tam sling on it. The group could have been smaller had I not made a 1 minute wind change. In my book the Hornady Garand load sets the standard for 30/06 match ammo.

Fick, is the Hornady Match ammo available on line now? I was not aware they were making it with the AMAX bullet either, interesting. Sounds like it did really good for you, how'd you do with it at the Eastern Games?

In the Garand match at the Eastern Games I used my as issued SA. I took a gold and 3rd place with a 289 5X just behind a 289 8X. I also shot the Garand EIC, with a 380/400, nine pts higher than the EIC winner. No points for me, I got them at last years games with a 365/400.
I went on to finish 6th overall in the Garand/Springfield/Vintage 900 ag. I was very proud to be in the top ten out of 182 shooters. I took a gold with the Garand, gold with the 1903, and a silver with a 1917 Eddystone.
I can't wait for Perry. Maybe I can do even better. See you there!

I think "the standard" of comparison would be a carefully assembled handload round and while I am sure that this Hornaday stuff shoots as good as Federal Gold Medal Match (made with 168SMKs), I doubt it shoots much better. I tried the Hornaday Amax bullet(s) several years ago in both 06 and 308 match rifles and neither seemed to shoot (then) better than the SMKs.

Likewise, at 30-35+ bucks a box, using ANY high-end factory "match" ammo would be a purely rich-man's game only at 3 bucks a round! Even at today's prices for bullets, I can still make up a very accurate match round with SMK's for well under a buck each.

I can't buy it either. I will have to make it myself, but the standard for performance will be judged against the factory load. There is very little room for improvement. The great thing about Hornady is that the recipe is not a secret. The load data is out in the open.
It is 46.8 of Varget behind the 168 A-max with a Winchester match primer at 3.315. With the price what it is, it is evident that they aren't just slapping it together. The performance on paper proves it to me.

Do you have any info on the data for Federal's 308 match ammo?
