Odd Inland /U. Bavarian Rural Police Carbine

While trying to answer a few questions re the Bavarian Carbine I referenced vis a vis the beechwood stock set further down the page I dug it out of my safe to take a better look at the transverse grooved filler plate in the rear sight dovetail.

When I looked at the 6 digit serial number 628564 I noticed that the INLAND had been barred over and there was a U. above it.I had been a trifle wierded out about why the rifle had an Inland receiver but all the guts were Underwood(dogleg hammer, trigger housing, slide, recoil plate etc.

Am I correct in now assuming that the Inland receiver was supplied to Underwood and built up into a complete rifle by them ?Is the 628564 serial number Inland's or Underwood's ?

How common is this? Or is it some sort of aberration ? The barrel is a 19" one with Germanicon proofs and the rear sight was replaced with one of those strange German windage adjustable receiver sights and as I related below a brand new Bavarian beechwood stock and handguard set.

Curiouser and curiouser is all I can say.

    Cheers all,

    JR

Inland sent receivers to Underwood around July/Aug. 1943. Your receiver was in one of those shipments. You have lineout Inland/Underwood and Bavarian carbine. Sounds like the Underwood barrel was replaced with the Germanicon one.

John, Between 06-30-43 and 09-02-43, Underwood received about 12,000 receivers from Inland. The Inland name was crossed out and the U stamped on the receiver. Even though the serial number was one issued to Inland it became an Underwood when it was sent to them. Sounds like you have a nice carbine for sure.
