Pics of my "new" Krag

After waiting many years I finally purchased my first Krag. It is a "98, made the same year. After many hours of scrubbing and oiling I got it to look pretty decent. Am ordering loading dies today and can't wait to shoot it.

Great Rifle! How's the bore? I will point out that it may shoot very well, even if it has pitting from frosted all the way up to significant.

that is a good looking rifle. If the bore is half decent it will probably shoot better and more accurately than a modern sporter with iron sights.

as I really like the simple 1896 sight, but prefer the look of the square box magazine. I have a couple of first year 1898s...one is is in very high condition with sharp catouches, but unfortunately has 1902 sight and handguard. Sling is marked PA NG, most of the Army rifles had the 1902 sights tossed and reverted to the 1901 sight. If anybody has a mint 96 handguard and rear sight to sell / trade let me know . These guns really are just about the absolute zenith of quality when it comes to military weaponry. Its hard to believe in this day and age of stampings and aluminum that these were considered general issue battlefield expendables.

Thanks for all the replies and kind comments. The bore looks pretty good and if my dies come in I will be going to the range this weekend. This is the first Krag I have ever taken apart and when I disassembled the receiver I was amazed at the craftsmanship that went into machining it.

Any hints on where I can find a good quality repro sling?
