More questions for the 303 sniper experts
I know you guys needs photos and I'm working on that, but till then I have a few questions that I can't find answers to in any of the books I have. I tried An Inside view of the sniper rifle telescope, Mr.Laidler
book and An armourer's perspective, The British
Sniper 1915-1983 And The Lee-Enfield Story by Mr. Skennerton
. All great books.
First the info I have on the rifle and scope. I think it's an import from Canada
that came into the U.S. in early 1998. It came in a British transit box with
Interarmco Case 131 stenciled on front. The S.N. is A37347, 1944, bolt and stock match, a Shirley I think. The 3 screws on the front pad have only been staked once. I hope I am using the correct names here. Scope and the number stamped behind the bolt on stock match. Scope is No. 32 MK III, OS 2039 A, AK&S No 28317, 1945.Mount is stamped 32189 I think. OK if anyone is still reading this, here are the questions. #1 The butt plate is a gray metal, not brass. #2 No sling swivel in front of magazine and #3 the Holland & Holland S51 stamp has 2 horizontal lines stamped over it. Is this correct?
I hope to send images of a few other Great White North imports I have. Maybe someone will find them useful.
Thanks Badger And to all who reply.
They call me General Nuisance and now you know why, AKA Rob, to my new friends I hope.

Gray metal buttplates are the norm.
No mid swivel is also fine for a 1944 rifle.
Don't know about the lined out S51.
Welcome! No nuisance yet. Try harder!

Rob,
You're not a nuisance at all. The rifle sounds like a straight enough BSA Shirley 1944.....I'm not sure about the lines through the S51 either.....are you sure it's intentional, or could they represent a minor knock to the woodwork in the past?
It's nice that your scope is matching, although I'm surprised the rifle number on your scope bracket is different, as ordnance replacements usually had the original rifle number barred out & the new rifle's number stamped on instead. Even so, it sounds like you have a nice piece of kit.........Can't wait for the photo's!
