Sight Lensatic Mk 1 ? USED FOR?????
Many years ago I picked up this item with Lee Enfield HS gauges and other stuff. It has"Sight Lensatic Mk 1 on the top. Looking through it you can see a triangle. There are two holes for securing it to something. Does anyone know what it was used for??

You have a very small portion off the lensatic sight from the early Bren gun...

Great to know. I'm not up on my bren guns, do you have a picture of how it is used on the gun? Is anyone interested in it? I have one more I gave to a friend to see if he could identify it, but he's not returned it yet.

Or more likely from a mortar

dial sight for a 3" mortar, with the lensatic sight as item 6 on top

This is not normally separated from the rest of the unit. Similar lensatic sights were used on Vickers MG.

The lensatic part was interchangeable between the 3" Mortar, Vickers and Bren if I recall correctly. The principle of indirect fire hasn't changed. A well trained wartime 3" mortar man (or Vickers gunner) would pick up and adapt to a current C2 dial sight within aboiut 10 minutes. Providing he could still read a map and adapt from degrees and yards to mils and metres!

Great, looks like this is exactly it. It may answer some questions to some of the gauges that was in the box other than the .303 h.s. ones. I will post pics and measurements of them, I think they may be Bren gun or Vickers gauges.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, and realise that some postings are now out of date, but no harm in asking!
Is the lensatic sight still available? I am currently restoring a Vickers sight and the lensatic bit is rather foggy. It can not be dismantled for cleaning, so I am very interested in getting another one.
You said yours is a Mk 1, so looking through it you should see a triangular area of light. The Mk 2 had a vertical slit instead. Outwardly they are identical. The one on the picture of a mortar sight should be a Mk 2, introduced around 1943/44.
Best Regards
