    Expended ammo. WWll training

What happened to all those "policed up" cartridges that were used in training etc. Melted down? Buried?

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. I can't say about WW2 but as for my time in the army we returned the brass salvage and it went through the system to be sold as scrap in Crown Assets. All discarded items went that way. Including weapons parts. They were rendered unservicable if they weren't already.

I can't imagine a country that was scrounging up pots and pans 'for the war effort' letting empty brass go to waste. Back in the hopper, I say.

    Model 1909 blank

One of the Model 1917 Enfield Service Manuals provided the following:
Manufacture of 1909 Blank cartridges is done by using cases which have been fired or which have slight defects rendering them unsuitable for use in ball cartridges.
