Took them shooting today
I had to go to the range to battle sight a VZ58 and SP1 clone I built, so I thought I would take the carbines, too. Weather was so miserable, though, I just did a very wet 25 yard battle sight check. I put up some carbine 25 yard test targets up despite the wind and freezing drizzle. The CMP
Inland I wanted to check zero since I shifted it to a pot belly and put late features (slide, trigger group, bolt, etc,.) on it. It was dead on still, and the zero had not changed. No adjustment was necessary. The soggy groups looked like the ones I have posted before.
The Saginaw barreled receiver I built up surprised me a little. I expected it to be a good shooter because the ME is around 1.5. What I got was a 1" five shot group, despite the repro flip and Type I barrel band! I drifted the rear sight to center the group on the target, but it was shooting low. I fixed that by replacing the front sight with one I had that was trimmed about 1/32" to 1/16". Great shooter now. The ejection pattern of the Saginaw was odd, though. Good ejection, but over my head at 6 o'clock and on the ground behind me! Go Figure. No pictures because of the rain. I also did not shoot past 25, because you could not see 100 yard targets through the drizzle and gloom.

I'm liking that ejection pattern
better than 5:00 50 feet away. Really interesting that you were able to get that thing in the vicinity and better with a flip. My best is a NPM and it will hold the 10 ring on an SR1 at 100 yds but that was with some fine tuning with the PI adjustable sight. I also have to hold Point Of Aim instead of 6:00 which I prefer, because of the lack of fine elevation adjustment. Ever do anything with the trigger?

I was very surprised and pleased, myself. I knew the CMP
Inland was an awesome shooter, but the Saginaw was a bonus. Never did anything to the trigger. The Saginaw has the mid-war Inland trigger group from my CMP Inland. The Inland now has a late Inland Housing with misc. parts. As for the flip, I had to drift it almost all the way left in the channel to get it centered. It was shooting just below POA with the new Type I front sight, so I had a used one that had been trimmed that i put on when I went home. That will raise it into the black on the 25 yard test target, but I don't know how much yet. I have a type III band cut to Type II I got from Herr Gunner that I thought of putting on the Saginaw (just a few thousand off from when they used Type IIs) because I didn't expect the repro Type I to hold well - but it did. I will probably leave the repro on until I find a reasonable original Type I.
I was double surprised because I shot well with really foul weather. I plan on going to the range again when I get home from vacation, and shoot with better weather.
BTW, I decided not to sell the Saginaw! Having two good shooting carbines is too good to pass up.

PS: both rifles I "hung" in the recoil lug as per the instructions on the CMP
carbine page. That is supposed to be key in accuracy. The Inland has 1/16" gap between barrel and nose with a type III band, and the Saginaw has 1/8" space and the type I repro band.

I've had good luck figuring 1 MOA for every .006" change on the sights - so depending on whether your sight is trimmed 1/32" or 1/16" you could figure the POI should raise from 1.3" to 2.6" respectively - this worked for me changing the rear sight for windage, and should be the same for the front and elevation. - Bob

It's funny, just went to the desert in California with my son and his friends for a watermelon demolition derby and Bar-B-Q ( 1st Annual Lakeside Fire Dist Watermelon destruction derby retro SP1 clone shines! ). Shot lots of 5.56 (about 1,500 rounds) from my Sp1 AR-15 clone (and other AR-15s), and lots of ammo from my VZ-58. Funny thing is, I wished I had brought my carbines to shoot! They are absolutely my favorite long-gun to shoot!
