S'G' 1,829,xxx Front Sight Question
Asking and researching for a friend.
I've read this post a number of times, gathering what info I could from it...
Front sight…..sideways N or Z
Then looked my closest to his S'G' over.
My S'G' 1,823 has Type I frt sight marked N and no number (2-7) on outer leaf.
It looks to be the original frt sight and Underwood 8-43 barrel, with unmarked 2 weld Type I barrel band....

My friends question.....
Might a sideways N ( AKA Z ) front sight be correct for his S'G' 1,829,xxx?
There are no numbers stamped on the outer leafs.
My best advice to him,
I've found nothing in the records I have, stating that IP or S'G' used the Z marked sight.
They used only Type I milled frt sights. Early unmarked, (very few), IPN,PN or N all marked with a number (2-7) on the outer ear are correct for the split serial number block for IP/S'G'.
Note that some came with just the N stamp and no number (2-7) stamped on the outer leaf, These no number leafs were used in the mid 1943 range.
Do I have him heading down the right road?
Can anyone add to this?
Anyone like Bobg the SAGINAW MAN out in Washington State ??
Appreciate any help,
Charlie-painter777

Charlie,
I don't know if this will help you, but I hate that no one else has kicked in an answer. I have S'G' 1848XXX. It has an Buffalo Arms 7-1943 barrel original to it. The front sight on it is a Type I marked RI. It does have a type III band so I know the sight has been off of it at least once.
It's hard to say exactly with the S'G's since the numbers jump around. Have you emailed Brian or Bruce directly?

Here's some pictures of the gun that Charlie's helping me with. The original sight is a milled Type I with "7" stamped on the left side and "N" behind the post. The barrel is an Underwood stamped 8-43. The front band is marked "U" with 3 spot welds on top. The sling swivel has "UP" on it. I'm thinking of replacing the sight with an N or Z, but have been told the sight was modified by an armorer, and the gun was in the Pacific Theatre. Maybe I should leave it alone?

Bob,
If the question is just to correct the sight, I am sure that everyone will have an opinion. In my opinion, if that sight was used and modified in the Pacific, it more "original", "correct" and "historical" than any replacement "correct" sight you could ever find - even from the carbine with the serial the next digit up.
Just my two cents worth...

S'G' front sight
If everything else is orig.? I wouldn't change it. It looks like it's orig. and never been removed. I didn't see any marks on the bbl., it's amost impossible not to leave some sign that the sight was removed. Without refinishing it someway to hid the marks. Who really knows who or when that sight was modified. But from the petina it was a good while ago. Bill

Bill, thanks for your helpful comment. Yes, the rest of the parts in the gun appear to be correct (all marked IP or S'G' - safety is unmarked) except for the sling which has "D" tips and is marked MRT Oct 53. The stock and hand guard are both marked RSG and there aren't any rebuild stamps. The rear sight is different than most I've seen listed on Milsurps. It has a B-IP base and the leaf is marked RG-S'G'. From what I can tell, Grand Rapids assembled the sights from components and this one just has different parts than most. Others have posted that their front bands have two spot welds, but this one has three?? Bob
