K98 Sniper in Competitive shooting questions

This summer my father and I are wanting to shoot in the new sniper class they're having at Camp perry up here in Ohio. They shoot at 300 and 600 yards. Has anyone done this on this forum? Can a k98 mauser produce good results at those ranges? Your limited in scopes to zf-39 and variants, zf-41, zf4 and for some reason the weaver k4 which I really dont want to use. What are you guys using?

Im considering setting up a rifle for the same CMP matches you mention. I havent decided what to use as I have to M91/30, a No 4 Mk 1 and a couple of Swede M96s. Im leaning toward the Swede but because its a All Matching rifle I hate to drill it up for the scope mount system. The 6.5x55 is a good long range round and will shoot well at both 300 and 600 yards. Im still undecided though.

The reason the K4 scopes are allow (I think) is because of the scarity of original scopes for any of the "sniper rilfes" that are allowed in these matches.

I hope this match doesnt turn into a "equipment race" with competitors have rifles built out of "new" parts ie the Gibbs 1903A4.

WWII experience suggests "yes". Take a look at the film on sniper training provided by Badger as a "sticky" (at the top of the forum). And my FN-Israeli Mauser in 7.62 certainly works fine at 300 meters (haven't tried 600). But not with any old ammo (that applies to all rifles!). If you are shooting an 8x57 you will need some of the pricey stuff from Norma, RWS, Sako and the like - or, of course, ammo hand-loaded for the rifle. 8x57s tend to be long in the throat, so bullet selection (about 180gn) and seating depth are even more important than usual.
