Moving from California

My company is relocating me from CA to St Louis, MO; and I'll be moving my ammunition and guns myself along with any other personal belongings I don't want to trust the movers with. What are the rules and regulations that I need to be aware of?

Great advice, I did it about 10 years ago. Small amount of ammo and a few guns. Guidance at the time was locked and unloaded in the trunk. I had reciepts and I was also on military orders. Im sure the rules have changed.

Moving from California

Congratulations. Now you won't be restricted by California gun laws.

Safest way is in a locked crate or locker preferablly with the bolts removed. Ammo is a seperate locked box preferably in a different area of the vehecle. Hand guns field stripped and in a seperate box.. They have to be so they can not be readily operable I beleive is the term they use.

From the Faq on the ATF website:

Q: May a person who is relocating out of State move firearms with other household goods?
Yes. A person who lawfully possesses a firearm may transport or ship the firearm interstate when changing his or her State of residence.

Certain NFA firearms [ed. machine guns etc] must have prior approval from the Bureau of ATF before they may be moved interstate. The person must notify the mover that firearms are being transported. He or she should also check State and local laws where relocating to ensure that movement of firearms into the new State does not violate any State law or local ordinance.

Give some thought as to how you might secure the load during an intransit break down, flattire. (i.e. Cellphone, road service, relief driver etc.)
Also pick your hotels and motels carefully.
i helped a friend move about 100 rifles from DC to just outside Pittsburgh. We had a small Uhaul. but all the rifles were in cartons and it wasn't that long a trip.

long distance movers

St Louis is nice. I once spent 10 days there at a convention. It has its rough parts but certainly has its nice parts too. On the gun laws, it can even vary from state to state I think. Locked and unloaded in the trunk I'm sure is mandatory in all states. Make sure to have your permits etc obviously. I'm no lawyer though.
