M-1 carbine magazines

I've wanted an M-1 carbine since 1952 and I finally got one... LMAO...Now the questions will begin...I certainly hope they will not sound too stupid or repetitive to you guys.

What is the difference between an M-1 carbine magazine with LSHO and without LSHO? Does anyone have pictures of the difference? Thanks.

The follower in the magazine is tapered at the back on most GI 15 round mags. That allows the bolt to ride over it, and close after the last round is fired. Most 30 round GI magazines have a square cut edge at the back of the follower. With the latter configuration, the bolt can't slide over the follower after firing the last round - so it stays open. I don't have any pictures, but if your gun has a mag with it, take a close look at the follower and you should be able to figure it out. - Bob

...Thanks Bob...It does have one 15 rd mag. and I do see what you mean. That's really what I expected to hear. Now I'll ponder a way to modify that follower in a way to give it the ability to hold back on that last shot. Thanks a bunch...

( It's probably chasing a non-viable proposition but it'll give me something to think about for a while...LOL... )

I have a handfull of commercial five round magazines and they all have the LSHO

Thanks Bill...I ain't got nuthin' YET...LOL......It would just seem that the LSHO follower would have been a good design from the get-go as it would have avoided false trigger pulls when it was needed the most and ( I'm not sure about this yet but...) it may have eliminated potential firing pin damage...May be I think too much...

...Thanks so much JimF4M1s...I clearly see the difference and I also see the impracticality of trying to do any modifications to old mags. I'll just stick with the mag I have as I'm already too darn old to start searching for others...Thanks again...

Yep, I'd forget about the mag LSHO for now. You have bigger fish to fry - If you're completely new to carbines you have a lot more questions to ask that you haven't even thought of yet!

...You are so right Harlan, that magazine was the first thing I took out and looked at and it was the first thing that generated a question. The magazine has a "KI" stamp that is upside down.

Looking it over quickly generated questions as well...it's an Inland with a serial # 3169XXX. I see the expected "Inland GM Div" stamp on the barrel with a date of 12-43. It has the type 3 barrel band I believe with no visible stamps. I think this automatically makes this a rebuild.
The magazine release , when looked at with the gun held horizontally and the barrel pointed to the right, has an underlined "M" stamp. I see no other stamps in the trigger group area on either side. Holding the rifle in the same orientation I see what "appears" to be a P1 on the side of the adjustable sight. The "P" is very hard to recognize without a magnifying glass as it appears washed out somewhat.

It has a stock which I believe is not appropriate for the gun. It has the M-2 potbelly type stock which is what I would have preferred anyway. It is very dark with the grain plainly visible. It does not seem to be in terrible shape. The upper handguard has two ( 2 ) rivets with no cracks. It seems slightly lighter than the lower stock so it probably isn't original to the stock itself. It has a metal butt plate. I see no cracks that are apparent just sorta normal dings and small dents with possibly a few small chips here and there...most notably in the oiler cut-out area on the oiler side of the stock. In an area between the oiler and grip of the stock there is a stamp of two ( 2 ) crossed cannons over a wheel. The "ramped" area, where the strap comes, out has what looks like an "HI" stamp. No other stamps are visible on the stock or the metal surfaces with the gun being totally assembled at this point.

I have a few pictures I received from the gentleman I got the gun from. I'll take more when my daughter gets home and I'll include them here and with any questions that crop up ( inevitably ).
