Cleaning NIW magazines
Hi,
I bought a batch of New In wrapprer magazines and removed the wrappers only to find that the mags are gummed up with residue of the preservative--both inside the mags and out.
What is the best way to clean them/
thanks

I use a homemade cleaning mix called Ed's Red bore solvent. You can find the recipe easy on the internet plus it's cheap to make. It's an equal parts mix of transmssion fluid, kerosene, mineral spirits, and acetone. I leave out the acetone as it's too dangerous to use in my basement workshop. I soak the parts, brush off the sludge, then wipe clean with a rag.

Wash in Naptha or other mild dry-cleaning solvent. Naptha is the main ingedient of charcoal lighter fluid and Coleman Fuel, for example. After cleaning, use a light oil in and on the mag like Eezox or Rem oil for rust prevention. Obviously this solvent is flammable (duh) so use it outside with no smoking (big DUH).

Boiling water is the original way. cosmoline
will float off and the hot steel will dry immediately.

I mix about 20 to 1 kerosene and type F transmission fluid. It will clean anything and everything off!

You probably want to disassemble them first. Slide the baseplate off, depending on the type, there is usually a little hole where you can stick something pointy to GENTLY pry the edge over the rim of the body, then slide it off. Remove the spring (note which way it comes out) and the follower. The inside will be gunked up, too. A toothbrush and some mineral spirits or kerosene works, just let the parts soak a while. Apply a thin coat of gun oil and reassemble. Watch which way the spring goes in.

I disassemble and boil the magazines to remove cosmolene. Take them out and let them dry. Then use a 12 ga shotgun mop and Remoil or Breakfree CLP to lube insides, follower and spring. Then re-assemble and wipe down the exteriors.

from something or other a long time ago.

That and a bit of a brush. Like they said, don't forget to oil after.
