Springfield 03A3 30-06 Recoil Pad

I just purchased my new to me Springfield 03A3 and I want to put a new recoil pad on the butt. Currently there is just the metal butt plate.

Does anyone have any advice what size, make, model recoil pad I can buy to install? I am not looking for a slip on, I would like to permanently install the pad to the rifle butt.

Are you asking about an original military stock or a sporter? If the stock is all original it would be wise to keep it as is. I kmow it is your rifle but please don't modify any original stocks or other parts. You could find an already modified stock to put the recoil pad on or find a nice sporter stock. KEEP the oiginal stock so you can switch back when you realize how awesome the original really is! Salt Flat

Do NOT ad a recoil pad to any military issue original stock! An original military rifle is a for real piece of history.

The pad doesn't do much if your technique is right. Most people hold long guns too loosely - and it beats you up if you do.
If you pull it tight into your shoulder, and get a strong cheek weld onto the top of the stock, firm pressure both places, your body and the rifle recoil as a unit - no pain! I teach Law Enforcement Shotgunning, and even a 12 gauge with slugs is nothing even for 5' 2" girls - but only if you hold it right! CC

Military rifles that kick I use an over the shoulder recoil pad. We call them 'pusspads' because I can't remember the brand. They actually absorb more recoil than a rubber recoil pad and the gun stays all original. I was teased at a match for wearing one and then I noticed more guys wearing them as time went on.

Alright,alright,alright.... I got a pusspad in the shooting bag too, it's a Past. BUT,,, it's only used on the Mosin's and only AFTER more then 40 rounds.

Phew,, that felt good to get off the chest!!. Hey, if anybody wants to admit to using a beer cozy or didn't know how to put on a jimmy, I'm all for a thread in General discussion...:mad smile:

At one time the Ordnance department issued a slip-on pad that did not require alteration to the rifle. I think that after WWII some company made a duplicate of this. I do onot know if they are still available.
Cmon guys- shoot one of those "S" stocked M1903 through a 100 shot regional match with hot handloads or the old M1 ammo and cloth 10-X shooting coat with no shooting mat. That would make a "flincher" out of a cigar store Indian.

There was a slip-on pad made, as Cosine26 already mentions. This one was for shooting grenades, many other nations had those aswell. You can find this pad on eBay I believe.

That USGI Grenade Launching "slip-on" US Ordnance pad has been reproduced in good, modern rubber, complete with markings and comes with a couple of inserts that can lengthen pull or soften it further. Looks cool and GI, too. CC
