USS Alabama
Sitting about 50 miles from me... Used to be a billboard out on I-10 with a pic of the old girl with words to the effect that "You are in range of the USS Alabama!". A person could easily spend 3 very enjoyable days doing the "Battleship Park" tour one day and then motor on over to Pensacola to spend a couple days at the National Museum of Naval Aviation at NAS Pensacola...

At the last Chantilly (VA) gun show, I picked up a copy of a book called "War Diary 1942-1944". It was a cruise book of the USS Alabama, and shows photos of the entire crew, with a lot of action shots taken during combat, as well as several hundred candid shots of the crew at work (cooks, boatswain's mates, aircraft mechanics, etc.).

USS Alabama featured in latest.....
Sea Classics. The New Jersey still showing her graceful lines. And then we get to the sad case of the USS Iowa still sitting with the Mothball Fleet in Susuin Bay. So much talk, with little action to save her from neglect. Maybe this group will finally get things going before it's too late. It will take millions to prepare the docking facilities at Mare Island ( like where will THAT come from). Too bad San Francisco didn't want her, the tourist base would have been much stronger there than up in Vallejo. However there ARE possibilities as the commuter Ferry docks across Mare Island Strait from the "Yard" as those who worked there called it. BB

Dan - I've joined the "Brotherhood to Stamp Out People Who Use Those Annoying Smiley Things". Sorry but you are now scheduled for extermination unless you take a solemn vow to cease and desist. As you can see, I've just been practicing with the optional do-dads this new site offers, to help me crap up my postings.
