I measured exactly 59 1/2 inches from end to end. I didn't include the buckle.

One for Peter: I have an observation about these scope-can straps, which applies to the square cans as well as the rounded type.
Once you thread the strap through all the keepers on the can, it is well-nigh impossible to open the can. This is because the keepers are on both the lid and the body, and are oriented in a circumference which is at 90 deg to the axis of the hinge. Effectively making the strap a chastity belt. The only way to reach the interior is to fumble with the strap until you have fed several inches through the keeper on the lid. But the strap I have (which is original) is such a tight fit in the keepers that the process takes so long that one loses interest and chastity is mercifully preserved.
This is probably the reason I either don't see these straps much, or if I do, they are curled up snoozing in the corner of the chest where they can't cause trouble.

The straps were crap in truth. That's why they were replaced with webbing. Worse still were the straps that were joined. Getting them through the slots was impossible! But like I said before, when the kit was returned, it had to be to the CES. That's probably why mine are worthless. Because they are as I 'acquired' them and used them and not as per the CES

I like the webbing straps the best. They were in P'37 khaki and then later P'44 green which soldiered on through the career of the L42A1. Finding the webbing straps is considerably more difficult than finding the leather ones for some reason.

Best were the short cross-straps. .37 or 44 or 58 patt webbing had a mixed selection. Thread through from each end and join with a rear buckle off a web belt. Or a similar buckle from any other odd bits of webbing

I had some old 1944 dated webbing laying around and it doesn't look to bad if you ask me. I think its Danish
but for now it will do.
