Tri-Pods for Photography
Several people here have stressed the importance of utilizing tri-pods with photography. I most certainly concur.
There are several "types/configurations" of tri-pods. I have encountered two types and one is of specific preference to me.
One, a later production type (the one on top in this photo), has all three legs attached together at the center post. All three legs are somewhat articulated together which results in considerable limitation of use when the subject, for instance, is on a floor. To me, it seems these are used primarialy for horizontal attitude photography.
The other one, an older model and one which I prefer, has legs where their movement is independent of each other. With this type, much greater control of the almost vertical attitude is available. You can extend one leg fully and ALSO move it/position it inward, independent of the others, and yield an almost vertical photography mode.
For the second (bottom & older) type ~ look in antique shops, flea markets/swap meets, & garage/yard sales.

Good advise........
I have an old tripod similar to the one you showed in the lower portion of your pic. One CAN however, use the other type where the legs spread evenly by shortening the front ones and lengthening the rear one for an overhead view. The result will NOT be self supporting though as the weight will be foward. I took the enclosed pic in this manner and have used the technique for many more pics.
FWIW,

I also use my tripod as described above. At times I extend the back leg far enough out that have to put my foot on the tip of the leg to keep it from falling over. Just set the self timer, and let it go to work.

One or two 25Lb. bags of lead shot are handy to have around as "misc. shop tools/aids", to hold/support things.

Something I'm still struggling over is taking "direct down" pictures using tripods. You have to prop the rifle up to really use a tripod, which means a background, light setup, etc. I have a copy stand, but it is hard to have the camera high enough to take the picture of the whole rifle.
