Webley MkV and Moon Clips

A casual shot of the 1914 MkV and the moon clips for an S&W M22 that fit it perfectly.



Loads are nice dirty Unique and lead SWCs---no hot rods or red lines, please.
Shot left of center at seven yards, so I got out the lead block and little brass hammer to bend the front sight a bit left; the old SAA method, don't you know.
Next range trip will tell the tale.

I was looking at trying that for an 1873 SAA too but was fresh out of clips that day. Sure better than trying to locate .455 ammo...for you.

Will factory 455 Webley still fire after that cylinder has been "shaved" down to accept the 45 ACP clips ?

In my cut revolver, the firing pin will not contact the primer of a .455 round seated in the chamber.
That's not to say the cartridge might not fall back against the recoil shield and be fired with some of the head exposed.
Which situation might be interesting in outcome. Anyone who tries this should have the video rolling and an EMT on the premises.

There was someone offering a thin ring that would fit the Webley shaved cylinders for all the chambers. This would allow you to use the 455 cartridge, but do not think it
worked-out and still not that satisfactory.

I have S&W Model 1915 Type 2 that I purchased many years ago, it was in 455 cal. As the 455 cartridges became more difficult to find and the prices went up, plus difficult
for me to reload, I had this revolver rechambered to 45 Colt. I tried many combinations of reloads (even black powder) and never found this to be an accurate revolver plus
I was not happy loading seven or eight grains of Unique to use in this "old" revolver.

While checking over the cylinder chambers, I noticed that the original 455 Webly throat was still there as only the rear of the chambers were enlarged. I cut down about thirty
45 Colt cartridge cases to the same length as the 45 ACP case, loaded them with a 255 gr lead bullets and six grains of Unique and started shooting much improved targets.

With my S&W revolver you can not use 45 auto rim nor half moon clips just the 45 Colt rim will fit

When we could have these in the UK - in the good old days -, one of the shooters at my local club used the half-moon type clips on his Mk6 BUT only machined the cylinder up to the line of the clips. That way he could use the clips and when he could get .455 (usually Fiocchi stuff) he could use that because the inner part of the ejector that hadn't been machined down held the cases rearwards and would eject them too.

It certainly worked well for him BAR. I thought that the .455 cases would bulge slightly where the outside of the cylinder had been machined away to allow the use of the half moons but it didn't affect them at all.
