Are L-E N4 Savage (U.S.) and Long Branch (CDN) parts identical
I wonder if stock parts made by Savage and/or Long Branch are readily interchangeable between N4's rifles of both origin ?
Also what's the purpose of the fiber wad resting against the large buttstock screw ?
Tanks in advance.

The parts will interchange. Some may require minor fitting...the fiber washer in the butt is to keep rattling noise down when oil bottle and pullthrough are installed in the butt trap.

In times of manufacturing shortages, Savage and Long Branch supplied each other with small parts. When Savage shut down their line in '44, they sent all their spares to LB.
It is not uncommon to find a 44/45 LB with Savage parts.

Interchangeable - yes; Identical - no.
There are also machining changes between early and later parts of the same manufacturer.
The progression of machining changes of a Long Branch receiver is pronounced during the production cycle.
One of the best examples of this is the "cut off" projection on the right side of the receiver.

Andre, The butt sockets on the Savage and Long Branch rifles are the same as all SMLE`s. Whereas English No4 butt sockets are completely round[so to speak]. This means an English butt will fit a Savage or Long Branch with out any modifications. Around the other way both the Savage and Long Branch butt sockets need to been reshaped to fit an English made No4. Forends and Handguards are completely interchangeable, between all makes despite there being small changes in all off them.[including factory markings]. Stuart.

This seems to be because Long Branch and Savage Stevens were provided with the No4 MkI trials rifles drawings, and they built their original guns to those drawings.
