So what's the word on this gun? Is it the real deal?

FWIW I've seen this rifle before. The circle whingding on the scope mount is a dead give away. I bet I've got a picture of it somewhere.

Electro-pencilled C Broad Arrow inspection mark I believe. Why so messy I don't know. Seems to have been one of those carbide-tipped things people still use to put their social insurance numbers on valuable metal objects, with similar degrees of neatness.

Isn't it? More made perhaps than some records suggest? Or numbers inflated to conceal true production levels?
The bolt knob mod is pretty different too. Considering the missing number, and remains of the previous one, perhaps an owner modified a spare bolt and the original never got refitted? Or one of those estates where the bolts were stored out of the rifles and the relatives/executor didn't know enough to mate them up again?

Interesting, except that there would be no space for an extra digit after the Broad Arrow or before the "C" unless space was deliberately left for it.
Some of the Mk.I.A scopes had the "A" added didn't they?
