This just on usedguns.com.au so I cannot get the rest of the sales pitch as its sold, thing is I have not heard of this type of No.4 which makes placing a bayonet on it useless so you end having a big tooth pick with you.
Looks by all sense and purposes a No.4 with the bayonet section lopped off the barrel and re crowned anyone here know if such an animal ever existed.

Pity they never check in here to ask the questions.

I wonder if it is in fact a 7.62, with the heavy profile Lithgow 7.62 barrel? These had a short end and no bayonet lugs..

This rifle explains a lot.
I've lost count of the Martini Henrys, muskets etc which I've come across over the years, with slightly-too-short barrels. Now it's clear they are all "experimental" models and part of the great Hacksaw Trials which were conducted in all parts of the globe over 200+ years.
Invariably the trials seem to have been carried out only on heavily-used examples.

It appears to be a "bubba" job where someone wanted to get rid of the extra barrel length and bayonet lugs. I've seen them before on other sites. The .308 rifles I've seen still had the full length barrels, just minus the bayonet lugs and they were marked "7.62". Hereabouts, you're looking at about $350 -$450, depending on the manufacturer and condition.

Very common to cut that last part off for such as Sears and other retailers. Parker-Hale did conversions as well as about 9 others. This one's been dressed again. No such military animal...

Quick way to restore a crown on a ten dollar rifle.

Saw one at local gun show described as a "bobbed" rifle and at a price over what I had a Savage No4 for sale. Dealers cut off barrel to restore a worn crown.

It is described in the sales pitch as a 303 not a 7.62 I guess you had to buy the special "Experimental" magazine as an extra!

That seller is totally incorrect. That is not a experimental short No4 rifle, that is an even more rare Lightweight Cadet-Cavalry-Sniping-Officer's-Snipers'-Carbine model No4 rifle, I can tell.
