Collectors today, drooling over the one time used tongue and groove wooden ammo crates lying about.
To the troops involved at the time, only ammo carriers and later possibly firewood.

Well, we used lots for tool boxes in trucks at home and other storage uses. Not that many though, the steel mortar boxes from 3" mortar bombs were far more sought after... All of that was only during garrison though.
