TZ 4/47 sight question

Hello all,

Not too long ago I bought an AJ Parker TZ 4/47 sight at auction. Upon mounting it to a rifle, I noticed that the sight frame didn't have the protruding "tongue" at the front that engages the ejector screw...it was cut off, perhaps to fit on something other than a No. 4. So, all that now holds it to the rifle is the long cross-screw at the rear.

Will this sight hold as solidly without that front screw mount?

That's a real problem. I don't think I'd trust it. You might try contacting Fultons of Bisley - G E Fulton Son. They repair P-H and AJP TZ sights and may have a spare base you can fit.

NO.

The two parts (frame/mount & slider) have to be number matched to ensure the slider moves consistently and without 'wobble'. If you do get a new mount/frame then you will need to send your slider to someone who knows how to match them up to avoid wobbling and slop.

I'd suggest that you'd be better to get a new flange welded on to fit to the ejector screw.

I would look at machining the TZ base to use a mounting bracket like the TZ 80 - they had Mauser and Enfield bolt on brackets that bolted on - the latter was for the ejector screw position.

Quite a few of these things got modified for other actions when the changeover to 7.62 took place . They were expensive and people were reluctant to discard them, also there might not be anything else in some cases.

Might have been done to clear the rear pad on a No.4(T). Would have needed some sort of improvised clamp going over the rear pad and securing with the typical "thumb screw" to take the place of the injector screw.

Sorry, but ' don't feel like digging out the necessary to test this hypothesis!

Many years ago I bought a cheap 7.62mm target rifle because it was built on a 1945 BSA No4 T body. The rifle sported a PH 5C target sight & to overcome exactly this problem the rear pad had been removed. Fortunately the front pad was still in situ & ok. It was an enjoyable restoration job getting the old girl back to something like she was in 1945.

Attachment 105541Here are the TZ 47 standard body sight next to the M80 compact body sight that uses the plate to adapt between Mauser and Enfield actions. The Mauser action plate is shown. There was a drawing shared a while ago for the PH design of the Enfield action plate - I may have a copy in the PC somewhere. But as you can see - there is room in the body to drill and tap the allen screw holes to get the Enfield Plate in position on your cropped TZ 47.

Thanks for the prompt feedback. Not what I was hoping to hear, but...such is life.

I took it off the rifle, and I do see an additional hole drilled and tapped through the inside of the frame in the area of the elevation slide. I had also noticed from the get-go that the windage slide, set on zero, was waaaaay to the right of the bore's centerline. So, perhaps it was indeed adapted to a plate. At the least, now I have an idea how to do it!

In the meantime...time to put a British knurled safety lever on my DCRA Longbranch and get out the spare PH5C.

Dump it and get a Central is my advice. Better sight in all respects. If you've got a rifle with holes in it already and don't mind a few more drop me a PM as I have some spare Central bases made to attach to various action walls.
