Springfield M1 Garand Early 1942
Good evening all,
Your thoughts please on this early 1942 Garand. Do you think the rifles description and photos represent this offering as being correct for a January 42? Final inspection stamp and stock maybe correct - sanded out cross cannon?

Difficult to say if original or restoration, always difficult to find a nice cartouche during this period
most rifles (but not all) in your serial number range have the revision 3 trigger guard.
I could not notice, but the rear sight cover should have a small letter or symbol stamp
I would want to view the short pinion as this has quite a value and often faked, op rod catch should be without lip on accelerator

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I think the rear sight should be a short pinion and to your point would be quite a value. The authentic rear sight was my biggest concern. Maybe this was a mostly correct rifle, but has now been restored or corrected. With prices being what they are now for an original, or close to original, who knows what people will do.

The checkered elevating cap and knurled windage knob were used well into 1942 (Duff's data)
The type 1 lock bar starts to appear in the early 500,xxx serial range (Duff's data sheets)
an original short pinion and original Type 1 lock assembly sell for $600 to $800 (have seen higher prices)

Thanks for everyone's reply,
According to Canfield's book on page 799; 200,000 to 500,000 should be a short pinion with a spanner and windage knurled with elevation checkered.
500,000 up should be a rounded bar, windage knurled, elevation checkered.
At 472,182 this may be correct?
None the less, thanks for looking and your thoughts.

According to the data, 472182 should have been issued with the flush nut, the type 1 lock bar is also quite rare if not
faked (sleeve installed ) and may have been changed in service
The Type 1 lock bar is found in the early 500,000 serial range

I agree with your thoughts on 472 above. It's still fun trying to figure out what is and what should be, that's part of the adventure.
