Finish on an 11'43 Rifle

Hi guys,

I was hoping for a little insight into this particular rifle's finish. It can be found in Scott Duff's red book and was also featured in the GCA journals way back when the issues started rolling out.

The rifle has a beautiful black walnut stock that looks even more gorgeous in the sunlight. Interestingly, the finish appears a bit matte with a golden-brown hue. I assume this may be the result of sitting in cosmoline in storage for some time.

Am I going crazy or is this just normal parkerized finish?

I think it's an original finish, just normal.

Not sure you can contribute the stock color to cosmoline. The grain of the wood is open I would expect if there was cosmoline present these would be filled.

I missed that part, the stock is just that color. Nothing unusual. Nice piece of material.

Apologies if that was not clear, but Jim was correct in that I was referring to the finish of the receiver, not the stock.

There are several threads discussing the grey park, color that may have been enhanced or turned greenish by cosmoline.

linseed oil will also give a cast to finished metal.
