Looks like a receiver heel clearly visible at the bottom of his white apron, most are being stored throat up, most likely a step in the finishing process. Great photo I had never seen before.

There's hundreds, a few thousand? Wonder how many? I guess as you needed them, you'd come get a case, like pop bottles and go to the numbering machine, then the furnace for heat treat and assemble...after their primary inspection and approving of course. Breaking sharp edges with files and such... They'd have to turn me upside down and shake me at shift end.

Yes, the classic SA receiver boxes, each with 20. They went from station to station in these.
