Removal of black Greek finish?

I know this has been covered before but I can not remember the answer. Can the black Greek finish be removed without damaging what was left of the parkerized finish below. I ask because Friday I got to stop at the South Store while on vacation and I picked up a SA field grade with the freaky black finish and I was wanting to see what was underneath. I think I remember something about paint thinner. Any responses will be appreciated. Thanks, Rod

Maybe try a little acetone in a small spot that doesn't show.

I'll try the acetone on one of the receiver legs and see if it does anything. Thanks for the help. Rod

There has to be more than one type of "Greek Finish". Some have described it a "paint" that will come off with solvents. I have two Greek returns ('03 & M1) that are NOT painted. It is a heavy dark parkerizing (coating as oposed to blueing) Mine are not affected by solvents as they ARE Parkerized.

A friend of mine used Birchwood Casey blue and rust remover that can be purchased at walmart on a Greek WRA that he was going to have refinished and it took the Greek black finish off without hurting what turned out to be rather nice original parkerizing underneath.
