Another one "Too Good To Be True"??
Please take a look at this stock on eBay and tell me what you think
M1 Carbine Saginaw S'G' highwood stock w/cartoush - eBay (item 290336667483 end time Aug-10-09 16:57:31 PDT)
I e-mailed the seller the following questions two days ago, but have received no response:
************************************************** ****
"Dear abcleigh,
I am a potential bidder on this item, but have a few questions -- What is the nature of the "arsenal repair" in the slingwell area? This seems to be an unusual area to suffer any kind of natural damage that would lead to what appears to be a completely "muddled" and "boogered up" area in the slingwell. Are the boxed S'G' and crossed cannons markings actually from the 1940's, or are they more recent? If you don't know for sure, please tell me your opinion on that, and your reasons for that conclusion. Can you please send me a closeup of the "nose" of the stock, showing indentation from the barrel band when a gun was actually mounted in this stock, and also the inside of the stock where the recoil lug and receiver were originally seated?"
End of e-mail
************************************************** ****
Those are just a couple of many concerns I have with authenticity of this stock -- overall, it just has that "TG2BT" smell!
Thanks for your input,
Ray

Of course, I think so, too -- I just really wanted to draw him out and see how he would 'splain these issues! Seems like a lot of his nice looking, beautifully marked stocks have never even had a gun in them! -- no barrel band indentations, no shiny spots where the recoil plate and receiver were seated, no shiny spots where the oiler contacted the stock, etc. Then there's the bogus boogers in the sling well (which would conveniently hide the mfr mark, if any were really ever there), and the stain slopped in the slingwell. Wouldn't surprise me if this weren't a Boyd's or Fajen or other new aftermarket stock, all dressed up!

I feel sorry if there is ever a legitimate seller from Modesto, CA. That clown gave the whole town a bad name.

Though the gouge distracts your eyes, it appears the repair is a crack at the top of the butt. Look at the lighter streak cutting across the grain,
