A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. ......for surveying, mounted on a transit? Or did someone put that together? If made for that use, why is the scope mounted at an angle instead of level?

Emri i can only speculate and suggest a couple of possibililities:

W-S was a manufacturer of precision tools and instruments like surveyors transits. I supoose its possible they might have converted some excess rifle scopes to this application. I think its unlikely.

More likely (IMO) its a one off conversion of a surplus scope. Somewhere I believe I saw a an old ad, dating to the 30's, where these scopes could be had for about $7.50 thru the mail.
