I never thought about this, did you?
I was one of, if not the first, to complain about see a Riverbank add attached to a thread on this Carbine forum. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
I received a personal response from a friend on this forum, and then saw the post from Badger. I guess I have been wearing blinders. I have a link on my desk top that I click on, and I come straight to the Carbine forum. "Too easy Drill Sergeant" (from Renaissance Man). I have a second link to the Edged Weapons forum. These are the only two I frequent. I just went to the forum link at the top of this page and there are at least 34 forums, plus the advertising section, stores, and libraries.
I come to this Carbine forum every day. It helps me to learn more about a hobby I really enjoy. I read all the posts, add to a few, start a few. I have also learned that I had been incorrect about some things as well. I have other resources I use too, but not on an every day basis. What I like is the new guys with such enthusiasm, the starting collectors show and telling their latest finds, the older guys knowledge. Even the other crabby old guys like me.
I knew there had to be a cost involved in maintaining a site like this. But never gave it the thought it deserved.
What I have learned is that operating costs run between $10,000 and $15,000 a year. As a whole that sounds like, and is, a lot of money.
But those of us (12,000 strong) who enjoy visiting and gleaning information, stories, show and tell, buy and sell, etc, can help. The donation button on the top of this page is one way to do it. There is a drop down menu that gives you choices of an amount that can meet most anyone's budget. I pulled out my trusty calculator. I used a slide rule for calculus in school, now a $5 calculator does it better and faster, I am old. But I digress. $10,000 to $15,000 divided by the lowest amount on the menu, $25 a year, means that only 400 to 600 members need contribute to fund this site. I know there are some who are on a tight or fixed budget, and many maybe not working. But 400 to 600 out of 12,000, that is only 3.3% to 5% of us.
$25 a year divided by 365 days is 6.85 cents a day. I bet the electricity to run my computer costs at least that much during the time I am visiting here.
I am a combat veteran as are others here. I am proud to have served. On this site we vets are shown great respect.
Let us show our respect for the time and effort it takes to give us this site.

Hi Jim,
well said! There is nothing to add.
Only one thing. If you guys ( and me of course too) has to buy all the books you need to get this knowledge thats shown on this great site, than you have to pay much more than only $ 25!!!
