Nazi rework GEW98

BSW on the front flat of the front sight. Weimar eagle 6X3 on the rear sight. Small 1920 on the stock. Matching and in good condition. Refinished and original maker and date almost wiped out. The last marking is on the sling swivel. I'm thinking that the 38 is a date? Any thoughts? Doug

I've only one Nazi reworked Gew98, but it got put into a somewhat different configuration. (I'm afraid I'm not a Mauser specialist, but I think there's one or two floating about...)

There should be a "S/42G stamping on the right side of the rear sight base. Look hard for that stamping. I didn't think the Germans re-barreled the GEW98's with new 29" barrels in 1938. Most of the GEW98 re-builds in 1935/36 were merely re-blues and out the door they went. This explains why your receiver markings are largely missing (buffed out). These rifles are nice shooters and nice keepers. Not nearly as common as 40 years back. A huge pile came out of Spain 1963/64. All quite nice.

No Mauser stamping on the sight base. I wonder what that string of loop, box and 38 means. Could the 480 be a Walther code? To many questions. Doug

Hi Douglas,

the 480 isnt a Mauser code and the WaA 214 stamps are used for different makers. It depends on the time of the rework from wich maker it was done. I added the list of the WaA 214 makers.

Yeah. I'm just guessing that the 38 is a date so that would put it with S&S,S. The eagle 6 on the rear sight sight? The BSW on the front sight? Doug

I just took a look at my GEW98. It has a 24" barrel and also sports the rear sight conversion. It has an "S42G" stamping on the rear sight base. The rifle serial number is "36" and the barrel serial number is 6090. My complete barrel band data is "80D", nothing more. Also this is a 1917 Spandau rifle but the 1917 date is "1917/28. Very close to the "S42G" is an WaA216 stamp. One odd stamp is the very bottom on the receiver next to the barrel is a stamp of a mounted knight with "BAYARD?" The final 2 letters are not readable. I guess this rifle came out of Spain 1963/64 timeframe. Hope this helps.
