Gun Geek Facts:
Joe Poyer's SAFN-49 article from Surplus Firearms Vol VII(2000) says(regarding production numbers):
176,267 produced in all. Breaking that number down by caliber and purchaser we have:
125,072 in .30-06 for Belgium,Belgian Congo,Luxembourg*,Dutch East Indies(Indonesia),Columbia,Brazil
8003 in 7x57mm Mauser for Venezuela
5541 in 7.65x54mm Mauser for Argentina
37,641 in 7.92/8mm Mauser for Egypt
plus a few test models:
5 in 6.5x55mm for Sweden, 1 in 7.5x54mm for France**,1 in 7.62 NATO for US**
*Of the 10,000 Luxembourg SAFN-49s, 5000 were semi-auto only and 5000 were selective fire ABLs.Guess Luxembourg got tired of being invaded.
**I think these test rifles were ordered as more of a comparison study or courtesy than a serious search for an alternative foreign rifle design. The Frenchwere set on their MAS 49/56 and the US on the M14
