    "B" marking...

What does the "B" denote that I find all over my 1943 Long Branch? My friend's Savage also has the "B" marks and neither one of us has been able to find it's meaning.

Where are the 'B' markings stamped? I was under the impression that a plain 'B' was a simplified BSA marking. My MkI Enfield Bren has a few 'B' marked parts.

I think you might find that it's actually two letters. The L struck over the B which was the Long Branch manufacture marking …

    Example …

    1941 No.4 Mk1 Long Branch Rifle

The "B" marking is a mis-understood letter. Not to be confused with the LB overstrike that Doug mentions, the "B" is found on all makes of No 4's. IIRC, Mr. Skinnerton references this in his tome, and is as curious as the rest of us. Not much help, but that's where we all are on the "B". ATB, limpetmine

Thanks, guys! Looking more closely, they are LBs except for the one on the rear sight. I pulled out my hand lens (from geology days) and could see better that they are Long Branch's markings.

I'm taking her out tomorrow for 'sea trials' accompanied by my '44 Garandicon (in 7.62 NATO).

    Cheers!
