My QHMC M1 details (welcome comments)

I'm a new to this board - but not to the M1 icon

. My father served in the military (as an MP) during the Korean War. I believe the rifle I now have was his service rifle but I am unsure. The serial number on the rifle is 4,800,xxx (Spring 1944) - It is a Quality Hardware & Machine Co. brand. I brokedown the rifle last night - and to my surprise the rifle does not have a lot of stamps on it...

The barrel is stamped I.B.M. Co. below the front sight - and the barrel appears to be machined (micro-grooves, around the barrel, the length of the barrel) on the outside.

The Sling-Slot in the butt of the Stock is stamped P-U

The stock also has a faint stamp of RIA with EB (below RIA). The bottom of the stock grip is stamped with a capital P with a circle around it.

The hand guard is stamped HI

I do not see any other stamps on the stock - and the only other stamp is on the Magazine release button - which is a W, or M.

The Sling appears to be original as well - with button clasp.

Can anyone else tell me where to look for stamps (on metal or wood) serial numbers or otherwise.

I found that the trigger housing is stamped INLAND

The bolt is the round type (EM-Q) - not flat - which I suspect to be correct for the serial number 4,800,XXX

I fell in love with this rifle the first time I shot it. Its in wonderful condition as well - I just need to freshen up the wood with fine steel wool - and lin seed oil.

Obviously, it's a QHMC w/IBM barrel. QHMC did not make their own barrels. Micro grooves are from the machining process.
The stock is an Underwood
RIA EB denotes an arsenal rebuild by Rock Island Arsenal.
The P is a rebuild proof mark
The handguard is an Inland
The M on the mag release indicates it's a type III (look for markings on the front of the mag release)
Trigger Housing is Inland
Bolt is Quality Hardware

This is a typical post war rebuild with mixed parts

Other markings would be on the barrel band, and bayo lug (if it has one), the front sight (side or top), rear sight side, hammer on side, trigger (must remove to see), sear (can be seen well if hammer is removed)

Only serial number is the one below the manufacturer's name on the receiver.

All in all, sounds like a great momento from your father. Congrats.

Fine looking rifle, there. Glad to see that you shoot it, too.

Personally, I wouldn't spend a lot of steel wool energy on the stock, if all you are trying to do is de-grime it. It looks pretty good from the get-go. I have had excellent luck using "Pledge Multi-Surface Clean & Dust" wipes on a variety of wood stocks of a variety of vintages with a variety of finishes and a variety of grime build-up.

Pretty mild, they do a good job removing the grime/grunge/dust without altering the finish on the stock. I then go over the stock with a silicone gun-cleaning cloth to remove any potential residue (partly because I just can't get enough of cleaning guns.........)

Don't want you to feel cheated. Not a "63" but I liked the older style (59). Besides I wanted original Rochester Fuel Injection.

I've worked with some of those old "Rottenchester" units before. My college buddy had a '59 with just the 283 4-Barrel. Those fuel injected Corvettes were also capable of very decent fuel mileage. Did the plenum unit on that model have the fins like on the cast aluminum valve covers, or plain? Seems like there was a "big" fuelie with about 290 HP and the "little" one had 245 HP, not sure. I remember the '61 283 having 315 HP. - Bob
