Rel telescope, observing, sniper's cmk 1

Recently aquired this REL telescope that is wrapped in leather and not the Vinylite covering. Unfortunately there was no case or the Cno 47mk 1 stand.
Anyone out there seen one wrapped in leather before or have any suggestions or comments as to how this may have come about?

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Given the date, leather would be appropriate.

I just got an email from Stencollector after showing him pictures and he thinks that this telescope has been re-wrapped with the leather at some point and should of had the vynal covering. Anyone have any comments?

based on the two I have, I agree with Stencollector. It is stioll a very nice item to have.

I wonder if it was FTR'ed with the leather? Stranger things could have happened. Seems less likely that a civilian would have the talent to do such a good looking job. Just a thought.

Also sure it has been re wrapped with leather. A number of the scopes had problems with the plastic peeling. Also, mine is plastic coated and not that far from yours by serial number...

So were the telescopes possibly re-wrapped with leather while in their short service by the Armourers? From what I understand the REL telescopes were not produced in time to be used overseas during the war but perhaps some were used post war?

Some made it to the ETO. Have seen pictures of a C.MkI observers telescope in Holland during the war.

The circumstances were that the scope was given to the Dutch fellow when the war ended, and he had pictures of the sniper, scope & new owner together at the end of the war.

IIRC it was on the Epay website @5 years ago...

We regularly used to re-wrap scout reg telescopes, binoculars and others, such as telescopes GS etc etc with a leatherette 'rexine icon

' material. But it was glued on. I never ever saw a Canadian icon
