5 digit Inland (With pics)

Picked this up over the weekend as an impulse buy. Looked like the sum of the parts would be worth it anyway.

5 digit Inland, mostly original

The Good:
Original IO High-wood I cut stock and O with ordnance bomb handguard with wide groove
Original shiny (on the inside) 11-42 barrel and Type A band
Flip rear sight with no stake marks
All Inland parts (except)

The Bad:
Well-used condition! Sanded stock with no ordnance bomb or P
Two holes on bottom of fore-end for attachment of ?
One extra hole in sling well for screw
Bubba got ahold of the front sight
.U. marked bolt?

Everything except the bolt looks to me like the way it exited the factory... (amateur)
Could a blued .U. bolt be correct for this?

Someone at Jouster mentioned Du-Lite blue finish. This looks like it after I scrubbed off a good amount of orangy brown oil varnish, grime, etc.

Your thoughts. part out, "restore", keep as is, etc.
I left a note for the guy that consigned the rifle to please call me to answer about history of gun...

Wow Jeff! I say that is cool! I'll bet that Inland has a tale or two to tell! Thanks for sharing it with us.

BTW, I wouldn't change a thing on that carbine.

Noticed the Flip Sight is on backward. The side of the base marked S~ should be on the left (muzzle pointed away). The base has to be pushed off from L-R, and put on from right to left (again all with muzzle pointed away).
The receivers dovetails narrow the farther you get towards the left side. The S~ stands for- toward the narrow side.
The peep holes on the flipper should have the concave/dished sides toward the frt sight when in position.
Records show some carbines in original issue with the rear sight put on backward.

Interesting oiler!
The carbine that started my woes came from my father and had a small cut piece of curtain rod in the oiler slot.

Remember some of these very early OI I cuts didn't have a Crossed cannon stamp. Some just had the flaming bomb in the slingwell, others also had a small CC with the Bomb. Can't tell you what ranges right now, seems like they were early 4 or 5 digit serial # Inlands.

The "Oiler" came out of the "I" Cut OK. Still have some glue residue to remove, but will go easy.

Thanks for the info on the sight. Makes me think it's been messed with, but why would you put an original sight on a carbine to consign at the hardware store???

sfdgunny, That is a cool Inland! That's the first carbine I've seen with the early take down pin. Some of those front sights were done in the field during WWII. I've got an S'G' with one that looks similar - picture attached. I've thought about changing it, but after 2 years the "bubba" sight is still on there. It's refreshing to see a carbine with "real" parts on it. - Bob

Since the sight was on backwards, I got it swapped around. Got some updated pics, also.

After cleaning 70 years of grime off the sight, which took quite a bit of elbow grease and time, the WI appeared!

How did the military keep that rear sight from drifting around during WWII? I know they "solved that problem" when they staked the &*%^$ out of the adjustables later on, but this one came off and went back on with incredible ease???
