Canvas Enfield valise
Did Enfield valises come in different lengths? I just got one that is about 4" shorter than the other one I have. It won't even fit a #4 or a Garand
. Fits my #5 nicely though. It doesn't appear to be modified, and it has a stamp with a mfg name (something & something- can't read it) plus a broad arrow and 1941. Can't be made for a #5 that early.

How sure are you of the "1941"? It's not marked "MH & Co 1945", and a "D" either side of the broad arrow?

It doesn't appear to be shortened, dunno. Suits my #5 perfectly, so no sweat really.

Hmmm, Most definately marked 1941. I don't know what it was made for.... If we could identify the maker it may give a clue. I'll try some googles and see what I come up with.

Might be made for British
issue of the US m1 carbine or Thompson M1A1
. Could also be for a Lanchester SMG.

Couldn't find anything helpfull searching "military, commonwealth, webbing, Patt37," etc. I did have a printed list of all the webbing makers but cannot find it. Only other thing that might give a clue is the shape of the pocket on the side if it has one. If it was for an SMG, then it may have a magazine pouch......? It is about the same size as the Aussie made bags for the No6 rifles. There were 20,000 bags made before the order for rifles was cancelled. These were 1945, though.

At first glance it's exactly like the standard Enfield ones, single pocket and all. I only realized it was shorter when I tried to cram a #4 in it. I could post a pic, but it's literally the same as a std Enfield valise, just lengthy-challenged. I believe it'd be a bit long fer an M1
Carbine. The stitching @ the muzzle end looks the same as on my std length one, not a Bubba's seamstress wife mod. Dunno. Best five bucks I've spent in months though.

Have you tried it on an SMLE? Does a No.1MkIII* fit? Not too many No.4's were on issue in 1941...

There you go stating the obvious. Didn't even occur to me. Anybody got a No.1MkIII* I can borrow?
