1937 Ankara short rifle.
Just acquired a very nice 1937 Ankara Turkish
short rifle. Bent bolt with slotted stock, appears to be converted from a 1903 (high hump stripper clip slot) painted rack number of 28, and kar98az style front sight. All numbers match, bolt, receiver, rear sight. What's the story on these as far as rarity, combat use, if any? This is the first short rifle I've seen in the flesh. Really like it. Looking forward to some info on this one!

They are not common at all. I bought one 10 plus years back. I think it came out of Century when all of the Turk Mausers were imported. Unpleasant to shoot with Turk 8mm ammo.

Took it to the range today, it does have a thump to it when fired, but all in all pleasant to shoot. Importer on this one is Ridgebridge(?) Ma. Stamp is very small on the barrel and pretty hard to really tell what it says.
Bolt handle is teardrop shaped, and there appears to be a small German
marking on the safety lever, firing pin, and recoil bolt. Other than that it is marked TC AS FA ANKARA 1937 on the top of the receiver, just like a standard Ankara Turk. Very well balanced rifle in my opinion.

Not many appreciate shortened, standard issue military rifles that use standard issue ammunition. `Tis a bit of an acquired taste. Somewhat like chilli peppers. Thus, the Mauser 33/40 Gebirgsjäger and the LE No. 5 seem to put the fear of God into the unsuspecting. I would think that the Turks issued your rifle for Light Cavalry, Engineers and suchlike. This was the common practice in Europe at the time.
Pics???

Thanks, hope mine shoots better as I get used to it. No sight radius to speak of but for police work for which it was designed it was OK.

Short is a understatement. This rifle of mine is 2 inches shorter than a M44 Mosin and about 1 1/2 inches shorter than a G33/40

Beautiful wood. I´m sure that quite some TLC has gone into it.

Thanks Villers. I am very curious to see the Turk model to see how they compare.
