Had been looking for a Toyo Matsushita Metals bayo
Finally found one at an auction. Handle was rusty as was the scabbard. Blade is perfect and a blue. Some scrapes from going in and out of scabbard. Type 30 with hook.
Payed more then I wanted ($70) but some idiot kept bidding me up. Had problems with this guy before.
I cleaned the handle and sheath with Hoppes Benchrest Copper solvent and a mild steel wool. All rust came off and patina is still there.

Interesting post and I am sorry that I have nothing to add about the bayonet. However I have to ask how comes the guy bidding against you is an idiot? He was prepared to pay less than you were for an item that you feel you bid too much for?
I’ve seen “idiots” that pay well over the going rate for various items but if I bid more than an idiot what does that make me? I know how some competitors can be annoying but never for bidding less than I did. Not a personal attack. Just puzzled.

If my bidding card goes up, his mouth comes open. Doesn't matter what I am bidding on. Never saw anything like it. Other people have noticed what he is doing and commented to me. I do not know who he is. Seems he has a personal vendetta for some reason.
Doesn't bother me that much and if I have to pay more, so be it. Thanks for your question....

I understand your point, I'm not sure you payed too much though. You HAVE the bayonet, they aren't making any more of them, and it cleaned up OK...to me, and I've made some TERRIBLE deals, it would be OK. It's clean enough and you have one...

Ah now I understand. Thanks for the explanation. I had a friend who you could consider an expert in his collecting field. When a certain person saw him bidding on an item he would often bid straight after him. The consensus was that he was using my friends superior knowledge of “value”. I.E. if he thinks it is good value at $100 it must still be a fair price at $105. At first my friend took it as a compliment but quickly learnt to get friends to bid on his behalf.

You would be quite lucky to get a half decent Japanese
bayonet for $ 70.00 at the gun shows in this area.

Never thought about it that way. That is probably what happened. Even the auctioneer sometimes asks me what he has (Military) so he can get a fair price for the owner. Of course, his 20% also. I do not mind doing that since it shows trust and even if I have to pay more.
A lot of the time I do not know and mostly with it is with patches patches. Google helps a lot on the I Phone too!
