I have a question regarding an Enfield No.4 Mk 1 with relatively no markings.

It has a 1942 on the left rear side of the stock, under the safety, on the same band(not sure what the band is called) is an Electro-Pencil or engraved number i take to be the serial 09649. It has England marked on the front right part of the receiver. The tip of the barrel is marked with caliber and 18 1/2 tons with a few 2's above that area as well. The stock has a T on the right hand side of the chamber, and an X on the other side of the chamber any ideas on this weapon.

Tough to pin down the manufacturer without a picture. The band is called the butt socket and the markings on the barrel are British commercial proof. 18 1/2 tons of pressure per square inch and .222" is the nominal length of the .303 cartridge case.

Areas to take pics of is,

Left & right side receiver.

Left wrist

Underside of forestock near front if there is a number stamped there.

Barrel re-inforce top, left and right sides.

rear sights.

Looks for minor stamp marks on the parts, 3mm or 1/8inch high usually, things like F5x or a square shaped S's, stylised LB, N79 that sort of thing...

The serial number says its probably a no4 mk1 from the UK....but hard to tell.

Actually a pretty nice rifle, except for the modified rear sight. Appears to still be blued'browned finish and has a scarce flat sided cocking piece. I'm thinking BSA Shirley. Your photos are actually quite good when enlarged to full size except for the left side butt socket photos. Seems the flash didn't operate. But that's the most important area left to determine ID. A shot of the rear of the bolt handle would be useful as well as the underside of the forward area of the fore stock.

Possible. I'm used to somewhat later examples which usually are marked in a very drunken fashion! Seems that by 1944/5 that the drunks had sobered somewhat, though...

Has the front left of the receiver not been milled down? In front of the ejector screw? Also, I've never had a handle on the flat cocking pieces. Un-serrated...when did they surface? Late war?

Otherwise, I'd have that one too...looks fine.
