Suit mount for the gpmg???
Afternoon all,
Here is one to stir the gray matter....
Peter, Andy and Mike , have you chaps ever seen a SUIT GPMG mount, seems a truly pointless exercise to me, you would have to be a bloody contortionist to use it, (I know Peter, pointless sights anyway at the best of times......got in before you !

just sent a picture of one (perhaps its been misidentified) or some sort of IDF add on??
RM serial number.....Royal Marine issue perhaps, Ship, boat mounting perhaps??
Anyone got an idea, I have never seen one before.
Cheers, John.

yep seen a few of them, but never in use.
it could also be used to fit the SAWES sight. the mount has been re made to fit the modern SUSAT
there is a new mount for the SUSAT that fits over the top cover of the GPMG (ocer the center line of the barrel) so when you need to lift the top cover you have to move the sight out of the way!!!!!!! now that is truly...truly poinless.....

So it should fit the L4A9 then?

Is that could fit, as in it will fit but never intended or it just happens to fit? I ask as the GPMG bracket above will fit the L4A9 but it was probably never intended to.

Nope. There were mounts made to fit the above weapons

I am thinking right back into the memory cells but cannot think of anything or any other sight that will fit onto the old SUIT type fitting - as shown on the SUIT L1A1 top cover and in the pic in thread 1. On that basis, anything with that sight interface MUST have been made to accept a SUIT sight. Good sight but a totally crap interface. On the get-back-to-reality stage, the notion that a SUIT on this fragile, spring locked (.....?) mount would last more that, say, 5 seconds ( a 50 round burst) on a GPMG (it'd have to by tripod SF?) is he stuff of comic books. An L4 would just shake it to bits.
The RM type serial number is a bit of a mystery too because generally speaking we wouldn't number a mount, neither would the Marines according to Steve XXX, a Marines REME Armourer. It also looks like that mount has been attacked in order to tighten the sight base to the STANAG dovetail. We used to deal with the makers of those things............

Yes, but you can fix it...

Yep, could fix the L4's BAR........., done zillions of 'em and zillions of loose GPMG body rivets too! We had loads of the remains of the old SAWES stuff in my workshop and the L1A1 stuff was made up from old captured Argentinian FN's, old trials FN's (wish I'd kept one of them.....) and worn out L1A1's. In fact I made myself a deactivated L1A1 rifle from an old body and TMH. I have a funny feeling in my bones that the SAWES top cover configuration was based on a SUIT cover but not quite the same. But as SAWES wasn't my scene I didn't take much notice.
Like I say, the SUIT was a good sight that optically formed the basis of the L11/L12 binos and the great SUSAT. But keeping it zeroes to a rifle was always trouble. Hence SUIT = Shooter Usually In Trouble
