I acquired a set of pre-WWI webbing that belonged to a relative of my wife's family here in Virginia. I only have a few pieces, including a virtually unused pea-green pistol belt that has the little metal d-ring for a saber carrier. I thought I had all there was.
At thanksgiving, when visiting with other family members, I discovered that my wife's cousin has his saber, which is a regulation US Army officer's saber from before WWI, which I guess makes it a M1902 or something like that. It's in perfect condition and it has his name on the blade. It has a leather sword knot and when I examined it, I noticed that the end of the sword knot was made as a whistle. I've neither seen anything like that before or read anything about it. It had an awful taste, too, and I couldn't make a sound with it.
It's the sort of thing you want to share with people.Information
